Food banks supply non-perishable food items such as canned and boxed dry groceries, frozen foods, bakery products, as well as personal hygiene or household products. These items are distributed by non-profit agencies to people in local emergency food programs. These emergency food programs are intended to provide immediate relief to families who can't afford to buy food. They also serve as a backup when the government's Food Stamp Program comes up short.
